An interesting topic to collect is notes with portraits of world dictators.
Currently I have Saddam, Khomeini, "Papa Doc" Duvalier, Khadafi, Lenin and Idi Amin.
One that I'd like to get is Jaques Bokasa, the Central African Republic president who crowned himself Emperor Bokasa I and changed the name of the country to the Central African Empire, but notes with him (as President, and as Emperor) are worth several hundred, so they're a bit out of my price range.

Soekarno and Soeharto from Indonesia both appear on bank notes, Mao Zedong from China, Joesph Mobutu from Zaire, Kim Jong Il from North Korea and Niyazov from Turkmenistan all appear on bank notes, and Fidel Castro from Cuba sort of appears on the back of a modern 1 peso.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about them. And I have all those too. (My daughter got me a pack of North Korean notes for Christmas, a couple of which have him on it, and one has his predecessor, Park.

I suppose we should include Tito as well as Kasawubu and Lumumba. Must not forget Biyogo of Equatorial Guinea.

I also collect bad guys... but I can't seem to locate a note with Kim Jong-Il... I see many with Kim Il-Sung, but I believe this is his father? I'm not sure. Anyway, I see this thread hasn't been active since January, but maybe someone out there checks in once in a while Smile If you do, can you please let me know what note Kim Jong-Il is on?

Thanks,
Carol

Alexandr Lukashenka is not depicted on any Belarusian notes at all.The notes of Turkmenistan were depicting Saparmarat Niyazov right up until his death in December 2006.

The 1965 decimal banknotes from Ghana depict Kwame Nkrumah, who was overthrown the next year. The Malawian notes issued right up until 1994 depict Hastings Banda. The Kenyan notes of 1966-78 depict Jomo Kenyatta,as do the current Kenyan banknotes.Uganda also had Milton Obote on banknotes as well as Idi Amin.Nigeria has had a few notes depicting Mohammed Murtala, who was a military ruler. The notes of these African countries are of interest to me,as they are British Commonwealth member states.

Carol, there aren't any notes depicting Kim Jong-Il.Kim Il-Sung was his father.

Wheatpenny,Bokassa was also known as Jean-Bedel Bokassa. His family, who still bear their titles of Prince & Princess of the Central African Empire still live in the Central African Republic.

Aidan.

Carol, you are more than welcome.I actually work part-time in the numismatic trade. In fact,we have got 1 customer looking for banknotes with nutcase dictators on them.

It is a pity that Zimbabwe hasn't issued anything with Robert Mugabe on them. He's definitely a nutcase, just like the current Pope of Rome is.

In the Iraqi banknotes depicting Saddam Hussein on them, there is a scarce 10,000 or 25,000 Dinars dated AH1423 (2003),which is not yet listed in Pick. This particular note is actually an American printed one done as a stop-gap measure until the current post-Saddam Hussein ones were ready for issue.

I don't think Colonel Gaddafi appears on any of the Libyan banknotes.

Ho Chi Minh still appears on the Vietnamese notes.Mohammed Daud appears on the banknotes of Afghanistan between 1973 & 1978.The Communist Laotian banknotes have a dictator on them,as do some of the banknotes from Haiti.

You can open this theme up further, and even go with other historical figures like Genghis Khan (on the Mongolian 500 Togrog, and other notes). Any others you can think of?

I suppose it's all relative who's seen as a bad guy... I guess most conquerers would be seen as "bad guys" by the conquered Wink

There are also banknotes from Tunisia that depict Habib Bourgiba, who ended up becoming an extreme crackpot & was overthrown back in 1987.

Sierra Leone has had Siaka Stevens on notes.I am not sure about Joseph Saidu Momoh making an appearance on notes though.

Joseph Saidu Momoh does appear on some Sierra Leonean banknotes.

Saparmarat Niyazov's portrait still appears on one of Turkmenistan's current notes.

Ghana's current notes depict the 'Big Six',including Kwame Nkrumah, just like the last of the old issues.Ghana is putting out a new 2 Cedis depicting Kwame Nkrumah alone.

Some of Nigeria's current notes depict military Heads of State, especially Murtala Muhammed on the 20 Naira.
